Like Angulimala he also robbed people. And his life changed when he met Narada (a wanderer saint). Narada made him realize his mistakes by asking if his family members could share his sins he was committing continuously. When he realized, no member was ready to share his sins — he became a saint, and called Valmiki.
Later when Sita (wife of Rama) was in exile, he kept her like a daughter in his Ashram; educated her sons, Love and Kush. And wrote Ramayana, ‘coz he was alive at the time of Rama, some people consider his Ramayana, a realistic version.
