Udyapan is a finishing line once you have crossed it — it’s over now. Udyapan is a last step in any kind of Vrat, Puja, Ritual, and Anusthan to a deity. Last few things as happen in Udyapan are as Homa, feeding to the people, donation of money or clothes to the needy and a long deep breath of rest (as it needs lots of hard work).
Though each Anusthan differs (or may not differ), it depends on our deity and types of Puja (Sattvik, Rajasik or Tamasic) we adopt. In my understanding, roughly, I can put Udyapan in two categories: 1) for Vrat & Puja that housewives do, and 2) for mantra sadhana Anusthan.
Udyapan for Vrat & Puja that housewives do: There are lots of festivals that fall in a Hindu calendar year, but most common are — Solah Somvar; Ekadashi; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday Vrat; Santoshi Mata; Karwa Chauth; Ahoi Ashtami, Chhath, Chaturthi, Purnima, Vaibhav-Lakshmi Vrat and so forth. Their Udyapan methods are transferred from one generation to the other; sometimes people also ask from neighbors or relatives.
Udyapan for mantra sadhna Anusthan: It is related to Tantra, where one chants 1.25 lakh to 10 lakh mantra japa for smaller mantra; and 11 thousand to 51 thousands in case of a bigger mantra stotra. It happens in an expert guidance (preferably a Guru).
The secret thing about Udyapan is, it ends by feeding people (and donating money or things to them). Serving other human being is biggest service, it lifts our soul and gives immense satisfaction that we have done something good. This is what humanity is, sharing and growing mutually. Other thing is when we serve other people (in these kinds of act) we put them equal to God (or see God in their heart) and interact to them with this awesome feeling: when we feed little girls on Navratri we feel that Devi herself is taking our food; and when we feed Brahmins during Shradh we feel that our Pitra (ancestors) is taking our food.
Udyapan has both mystery and humanity behind it — mystery is, our deity takes our offerings through humans; and humanity is, we serve people in the name of our deity.
