I had this idea in my mind that Bhasm Aarti is done with Shamshan-Raakh (syn: Chita-Ki-Raakh; cremation / corpse ashes; चिता की राख). Other people who didn’t know much about Mahakal put this idea in my mind and I believed in (which I shouldn’t have done).
Fearsome thing about Mahakal is, he is a god of death (and most of his Sadhanas are done in Shamshan). I’ve read many stories about the people who had pleased Mahakal: one was from Aghori Vimalananda book and second from some magazine. It was written that Mahakala Sadhana wasn’t so easy, they did it in Shamshan — after Pariksha (testing done by a deity), Mahakala appeared from the side (and they set free from the fear of death).
After these stories and people talking, I was totally confirmed about Mahakal Bhasma Aarti by Chita-Ki-Raakh. But what I knew later on was totally different.
It was — for Mahakal, Bhasma (Ash) is prepared from Cow Dung. And many Shiva’s devotees who apply Bhasma on their body, prepare from Cow Dung only.
Though Chita-Ki-Raakh is used in many Tantric Ritual (you may find these things in some of Tantric texts available on Scribd, or perhaps from some videos at YouTube). Aghoris who live in Shamshan, for them it is their temple, they apply Chita-Ki-Raakh on their bodies — but Cow-Dung-Ash is mostly preferred.
