Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on Shravan Purnima, this festival is for Brother and Sister. Sister ties Rakhi on her brother’s right hand wrist and blesses him for prosperity and health. In return, Brother gives her gifts and other things she may demand.
In other words, this festival is for women protection — where she asks her brother to protect her. In modern world (I’ve heard) some wives also tie Rakhi on their husband’s wrist. Anyway, this festival is for woman empowerment, where relation between males and females turns beautiful.
I think this festival is better than Valentine Day, ‘coz there is no heartbreak, blackmailing or deception. I’m not sure apart from India, if anywhere in the world this festival is celebrated.
The origin of this festival comes from Mahabharata, where Dropadi tied a piece of cloth on Krishna’s wounded finger — and in return Krishna saved her from Kauravas.
Another festival like Raksha Bandhan is Bhai Dooj, it is also for Sister’s protection and Brother’s health and prosperity.
