Katha
Story goes like this: Out of fight between a Brahmin and Kshatriya, the Brahmin was killed. Kshatriya was outcasted and nobody liked to enter his home and eat something. For couple of months he remained in great distress that what he had done. He looked for solution everywhere but couldn’t find anything as he was far away from spiritualistic acts.
One day someone suggested him Pavitra Ekadashi then for washing his sin, Kshatriya did Vrat and Puja on Pavitra Ekadashi on Sravan Vadi Ekadashi and felt relieved — sootak (सूतक) a term for the dead, that was on him, ended; and he could perform other religious works later on. Since that time this festival is celebrated.
Most of Ekadashi is related to lord Vishnu or his Avataras, people generally don’t eat rice this day worship his one of Avataras or him directly.
