You can’t confine your emotions in nine or ten types, if you do, it will turn in shackle — and later on you may not like it. Bhakti (devotion) is our emotions that we have for our deity and it has no rule, deity and devotee become one and nothing can enter in between. If something comes in between both will feel strange to each other. That’s why Rama ate Shabri’s Ber (बेर) which were all tasted by Shabri first; and Krishna wore Radha’s garments.
But people who are so mechanical, whose hearts are so dry — they should start Bhakti with Navdha Bhakti. It may help to change their brain chemistry (let it be just an imitation in the beginning); it may help to see a rainbow in their heart. Later on when the mind and heart are cleaned, they may leave all types of confinements that come to their Bhakti.
So here is nine types of Bhakti:
1) श्रवण — to read or listen about your deity, using books, mp3s, youtube videos, updesha and so forth.
२) कीर्तन — in Kirtan, you can chant your deity’s bhajan or strot, or just the name.
३) स्मरण — to remember, to put your deity in memory all the time, while eating, breathing, sleeping, and so on.
४) पादसेवन — to worship your deity’s feet.
५) अर्चन & ६) वन्दन, — to pray, chant your deity’s name or strot, and to do some Aarti.
७) दास्य — to become servant.
८) सख्य — to be a friend.
९) आत्म निवेदन — to tell the matter of your heart without any hesitation, shame, and fear.
