नाग भाई प्रणाम, Nag becomes her brother. अजगर दादा प्रणाम, Ajgar becomes her Dadaji. A woman just turns these terrible creatures in her relatives and gets many favors — this is a short Katha behind Nag Panchami. Bheema in Mahabharata became powerful like many elephants, it was just due to a Snake. Moral behind this festival is that Snake / Nag / Ajgar, they come in Devata category, that’s why they are worshiped — and they aren't necessarily bad.
At Nag Panchami, Nag or Snakes are worshiped — it falls on first Panchami in Shravan month. This day people worship artificial snake (they make it by tying many knots in a rope or say ‘rassi’ in Hindi), offer it its favorite vegetarian things like milk, sweets and other things. It is said worshiping a snake pleases वासुकि, शेषनाग, पदनाभम, चकम्बलम, कर्कोटकम, तक्षक, and many others deadly snakes known for their power and poison.
This day some people find the place of a snake and worship it there (it may be dangerous), but better thing is worship artificial snake at home and leave eatables for it in some jungle. As a devata, Snakes may help in removing enemy trouble, protecting from poison and in making someone powerful and prosperous (as they are the guardian of money); they live a long life so they may help for lots of years
You might have heard stories regarding इच्छाधारी नाग, मणि वाला नाग and about नाग कन्या (not विष कन्या). Even there are Tantrik Sadhna to manifest नाग कन्या in one’s life. And it is also said, a snake never forgets its enemy face. Thing is, snakes are mysterious — they are both a good friend and a bad enemy. One shouldn’t harass them unnecessarily and for their grace they should be worshiped on Nag Panchami.
Repeated chanting of this mantra “मुनिराज आस्तिक नमः” is supposed to go away a snake. I didn’t experimented with this mantra but you may find it at lots of places.
In sum up, Snakes are worth worshiping and they should be worshiped time to time.
