Mahakal and Mahakali both control death, either they can give it or can save from it — if you are going to a war, you should worship both or at least one of them.
Before attacking Ravan, Rama worshipped Kali: he gathered lots of lotus flower for offering, but in counting, one was less, as Rama wanted to offer specific number of lotus flowers. What he did? He was called by a name “Kamalnayan (one who has lotus eyes)”, so he took out his knife and moved his hand to take an eye out, in the place of missing lotus — right at the moment, Kali appeared and held his hand. Kali didn’t want if Rama hurt himself for her; she was pleased and blessed Rama for victory over Ravan.
