This festival is celebrated on Bhadrapada Amavasya.
It means the concerned person is satisfying Pitra by offering them water. Apart from water, in the name of Pitra, people (or animal or birds) should be fed; and in the name of Pitra, clothes should be distributed to the poor.
In fact, Pitras don’t drink water, nor eat food and nor wear clothes also — as they live is subtle world, they are satisfied by smell, sight, and emotions; and it causes their mukti from the yoni they are living. When they get mukti, they bless their people and go to upper dimensions or take new birth, everything goes according to their accumulated karmas.
When Pitras are in bad Yoni, they may harass their people, and it may cause bad health, low success rate, money problems and bad mood — in these kinds of home, there is negative energy and people fight a lot with each other. In general, it is a good habit to offer water (अर्घ्य देना) every day to known / unknown Pitra; as people offer water to rising Sun, they offer one more Lota (लोटा) in the name of Pitra, it is just that.
